Pada chapter kedua buku Telling Lies kita akan diajarkan definisi sebenarnya dari sebuah kebohongan dan beberapa jenis kebohongan.

Menurut gue, pertanyaan paling sulit yang manusia akan terus hadapi adalah pertanyaan ?Do you love me??. Pertanyaan yang paling sering diajukan oleh salah satu orang ke orang lain. Beberapa menjawabnya dengan kebohongan, beberapa lagi menjawabnya dengan sesuatu yang tidak benar namun tidak berbohong beberapa lagi menjawabnya dengan kenyataan.

Kenyataannya pertanyaan tentang cinta selalu lah dijawab dengan kebohongan. Karena kita gak pernah tau sebenarnya apa yang kita rasa dari orang lain. Kita hanya bisa mengasosiasikan cinta dengan keinginan untuk memiliki, caring for other, nafsu birahi, dan lain sebagainya. Semakin banyak asosiasi yang berhubungan dengan cinta semakin kita menyatakan kita mencintai seseorang. Tapi apakah itu berarti kita berbohong? Tidak! Setidaknya menurut saya.

Dari episode di film In Treatment, ketika kita dihadapi oleh pertanyaan yang sulit dan kita tidak mengetahui jawabannya maka kita akan menjawabnya sesuai dengan pertanyaan terarah yang dilakukan oleh orang lain.

Jadi bisa dikatakan jujur bisa berarti jujur mengatakan apa yang seseorang rasakan meskipun sesuatu itu tidaklah selalu benar. Misal, para pendeta sebelum era galileo mengatakan bahwa bumi adalah pusat dari alam semesta. Hal ini tidak benar (false) tapi bukan berarti para pendeta tersebut berbohong karena mereka tidak mengetahui hal ini secara benar. Hell, kita gak pernah tau tentang ini sampai Armstrong berhasil kembali menginjak bumi.

Jadi, bisa dibilang kebohongan adalah ketika seseorang mencoba untuk mengarahkan orang ke arah yang salah ketika seseorang tahu yang sebenarnya terjadi.

Dalam buku ini ada 2 jenis standard basics of lying, yaitu:
1. Concealing (Menyembunyikan)
2. Falsifying (Memalsukan)

Seperti yang kita ketahui concealing adalah bentuk berbohong yang paling mudah dan bisa dilakukan kapan saja tanpa sebelumnya memikirkan apa yang harus kita lakukan. Dan yang kedua adalah memalsukan sebuah kenyataan. Sebuah bentuk kebohongan yang memerlukan ekstra cognitive processing.?

Dalam berbohong hal-hal yang sulit dilakukan adalah menutupi emosi. Dan itulah apa yang dapat menyebabkan leakage dan clues to deceit. Misal seseorang merasa panik ketika ditegur bosnya dari belakang meskipun dia tidak melakukan hal yang aneh-aneh di Komputernya. Kita bisa tau dia panik, tapi panik itu tidak selalu seseorang berada dalam keadaan bersalah. Dalam film seri lie to me, kita selalu dihadapkan pada kasus. Bahwa setiap orang berbohong bukan untuk menutupi pembunuhan suatu kasus. Tapi terkadang kita berbohong untuk menghindari embaressment (malu) dari pengungkapan kenyataan.
Pada episode lain di the leverage ada statement seperti berikut, ?Your eyes shifted to the right (right brain is where the lies is available in most modern science). So anything you?ve said is lie? and then sophie tells him to say, ?Yes I lied. I am not here occasionally I just escaped from my daily life?. Ini adalah bentuk lain dari kebohongan yang paling advance, yaitu mengakui bahwa dia berbohong namun berbohong lagi untuk menutupi apa yang dia bohongi. Sometimes we found out people are lying about something but we never know what they lies about and the motives on lying. People might lie about anything.

So I might lie but that lie doesn?t always because I feel guilty. Itulah kenapa kita harus tahu apakah ada micro expression gue merasa bersalah ketika gue berbohong.

Sebuah kebohongan dapat bocor jika terjadi leakage yaitu salah ngomong mengenai yang sebenarnya atau clues to deceit yaitu perilaku yang menyatakan bahwa seseorang berbohong.?

Pada chapter 2 buku ini menyatakan bahwa jika seseorang pitchnya meningkat ketika menyelesaikan sebuah kalimat maka seseorang itu berbohong. Episode 3 Lie To Me menunjukkan bahwa putrinya lightman berbohong dengan menyelesaikan sebuah pernyataan dengan kenaikan pitch. Episode 4 Lie to Me mengatakan bahwa sang bestman berbohong mengenai the groom karena keseluruhan pernyataannya dilakukan dengan high pitch. Episode 4 Lie To Me, mengatakan bahwa ketika ada additional cognitive process because of lying seseorang akan menyatakan seseuatu berulang-ulang dan terbata-bata. Basically, buku ini mengatakan seseorang berbohong jika terjadi keanehan pada tonal voice (baik naik atau terlalu bawah), slip of tongue atau repetition karena additional cognitive process, atau karena facial expression lainnya.
